Liz -- Sorry if I didn't get back to you quicker, but I see you're in touch with Michael so I know you are in good hands. I've never built in a birch, but I do know they're fairly fast-growing trees (which tend to be not a strong as others), so just be careful in design in terms of size and height and you should be fine. Best of luck with the project, and my compliments on having the smarts to get those GLs and brackets from Michael. We all owe him a lot in this business.

Greetings Keith -- 4140 is generally stronger than stainless, so that's the standard most folks go with. You really only need to worry about direct contact points, so there's lost of ways to solve this. You can either go with a non pressure-treated beams spanning between the GLs (I love to work with black locust, but there are other species that are naturally rot resistant), use non-PT lumber and coat it yourself with a metal-safe protectant (which does set up a maintenance requirement to re-coat every few years) or you can add a non-permiable layer where any PT lumber might contact a steel bracket. If you look closely at some of the Pirate Ship Treehouse photos on my site, you'll see I used #30 roofing paper to do the trick. It's in its fifth season, and my annual inspections haven't turned up any noticeable corrosion.
Either way, enjoy that project and send me some pics when its all done.

John - i am looking to make a relatively simple two tree treehouse, and am very interested in using GLs or some equivalent TABs.

question is - what type of wood. i am thinking pressure treated, but all the tabs seem to be made of 4140 - not stainless.

any suggestions?

Thank you for the fabulous article - I now have to find another tree - I am limited in the sizes available - but I will keep looking. I have been in touch with Michael and will get my GL and brackets from him. I will be using a generator as I am off grid. What are your thoughts re birch trees?

Hi,

Very helpful article. Was wondering if you had any advice for dealing with a GL that spins but does not drive in?

Thanks,

Greetings Shayne.
Thanks for the kind words on the post. The best place to get GLs that I know of is from the man who helped invent them himself, Michael Garnier. He's a great guy to deal with, and his prices are as good as they get. Just check out http://treehouses.com/treehouse/construction/parts.html. Michael can help you figure out which GL you need, and his standard GL starts at just $85. Depending upon what your building, you may only need 4 or so, and it's definitely worth the investment in long-term piece of mind. While you're at it, you can rent the drill bit for $50 a month, also definitely worth the investment.
